With a background as an award-winning theatre director, John Crowley received critical acclaim and his first awards in film in 2003 with his first feature Intermission, which starred Colin Farrell. He followed this with Boy A starring Andrew Garfield and Peter Mullan [BAFTA for Best Director in TV Craft Awards].
Other films include Is Anybody There starring Michael Caine and Brooklyn, adapted by Nick Hornby from Colm Toibin’s novel and starring Saoirse Ronan. It won the Best British Film BAFTA 2018 along with three Academy Award nominations.
John’s most recent film was The Goldfinch, adapted from the Donna Tartt novel by Peter Straughan, and starring Ansel Elgort, Nicole Kidman and Sarah Paulson. Theatre work includes The Pillowman [NT and Broadway], A Steady Rain [Broadway], A Very Expensive Poison [Old Vic] and The Present [Sydney Theatre Company and Broadway].
Last year, John reunited with Andrew Garfield for the emotional romantic drama, We Live in Time. Starring alongside Florence Pugh, the moving film took home the Best Screen Couple award at the Women Film Critics Circle Awards and received nominations for several more including Best Director and Best International Actress at IFTA.
